Playwrights on the Moon
In 2021, I was invited by Susan Kaye Quinn to be a part of a lunar time capsule. Through her leadership, indie authors around the globe packed digital stories aboard an SD card and Writers on the Moon was born. It was loaded onto Astrobotic’s the Peregrine Mission One and we headed to the moon January 7, 2024.
I cannot even begin to describe the feeling as I watched with 24,000 other people as Peregrine launched on the NASA stream.
It was so incredible that once we had escaped the Earth’s atmosphere, I thought, “I want to do this again, but with playwrights!” And I immediately went to the Astrobotic website and bought a payload for Astrobotic’s next mission, the Griffin Lander.
And then tragedy struck when a propellant leak caused Peregrine 1 to be unable to complete its mission and it was directed to reenter the Earth's atmosphere on January 18, 2024 where it became stardust.
But the dream didn’t stop there.
Writers on the Moon will be on Griffin. And Playwrights on the Moon will join that journey aboard Griffin, too, in Fall 2025.
Our payload will be filled with the Complete Works of Shakespeare as well as the writings of 100 other dramatists.
Stay tuned for updates, the manifest of all the works on this flight, and watch as we shoot for the moon!
Are you a playwright interested in
sending your work to the moon?
100 dramatists will be chosen for the MoonBox via a blind draw. Those chosen will be asked to pay $15 to offset the cost of the payload.
In return, they will receive 20 MB of space in the lunar time capsule to fill with digital scripts, pictures, stories, and songs as well as a place in the online manifest documenting this historic time capsule.
The MoonBox will be left on the lunar surface for future generations.
